Deuteronomy 7-9

Warnings

7 “(A)When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to take possession of it, and He drives away many nations from before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, (B)seven nations greater and mightier than you, 2 and when the Lord your God turns them over to you and you [a]defeat them, (C)you shall [b]utterly destroy them. (D)You shall not make a covenant with them (E)nor be gracious to them. 3 Furthermore, (F)you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your [c]daughters to [d]their sons, nor shall you take [e]their daughters for your [f]sons. 4 For [g]they will turn your [h]sons away from [i]following Me, and they will serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and (G)He will quickly destroy you. 5 But this is what you shall do to them: (H)you shall tear down their altars, smash their memorial stones, cut their [j]Asherim to pieces, and burn their carved images in the fire. 6 For you are (I)a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be (J)a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the [k]earth.

7 “(K)The Lord did not [l]make you His beloved nor choose you because you were greater in number than any of the peoples, since you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but because the Lord loved you and kept the (L)oath which He swore to your forefathers, (M)the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of [m]slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God, (N)He is God, (O)the faithful God, (P)who keeps [n]His covenant and [o]His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who (Q)love Him and keep His commandments; 10 but He (R)repays those who hate Him to [p]their faces, to eliminate [q]them; He will not hesitate toward him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face. 11 Therefore, you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.

Promises of God

12 “(S)Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep [r]His covenant with you and [s]His faithfulness which He swore to your forefathers. 13 And He will (T)love you, bless you, and (U)make you numerous; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain, your new wine, and your oil, the newborn of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, [t]in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no sterile male or (V)infertile female among you or among your cattle. 15 And (W)the Lord will remove from you all sickness; and He will not inflict upon you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will give them to all who hate you. 16 You shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will turn over to you; (X)your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be (Y)a snare to you.

17 “If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I (Z)dispossess them?’ 18 you are not to be afraid of them; you shall (AA)remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: 19 (AB)the great trials which your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders, and the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20 Indeed, the Lord your God will send (AC)the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish. 21 You are not to be terrified of them, because (AD)the Lord your God is in your midst, (AE)a great and awesome God. 22 (AF)And the Lord your God will drive away these nations from you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, otherwise the [u]wild animals would become too numerous for you. 23 (AG)But the Lord your God will turn them over to you, and will [v]throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24 (AH)And He will hand over their kings to you, so that you will eliminate their name from under heaven; (AI)no one will be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them. 25 The carved images of their gods you are to (AJ)burn with fire; you shall (AK)not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be (AL)trapped by it; for it is an (AM)abomination to the Lord your God. 26 And you shall not bring an abomination into your house and become (AN)designated for destruction, like it; you are to utterly detest it, and you are to utterly loathe it, for it is something designated for destruction.

God’s Gracious Dealings

8 “All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, so that you (AO)may live and increase, and go in and take possession of the land which the Lord swore to give to your forefathers. 2 (AP)And you shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has (AQ)led you in the wilderness these forty years, in order to humble you, (AR)putting you to the test, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3 And He humbled you and let you go hungry, and fed you with the manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, in order to make you [w]understand that (AS)man shall not live on bread alone, but man shall live on everything that comes out of the mouth of the Lord. 4 (AT)Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years. 5 (AU)So you are to know in your heart that the Lord your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son. 6 Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to [x]fear Him. 7 For (AV)the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of streams of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in valleys and hills; 8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; 9 a land where you will eat food without shortage, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 When (AW)you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.

11 “Be careful that you do not (AX)forget the Lord your God by failing to keep His commandments, His ordinances, and His statutes which I am commanding you today; 12 otherwise, (AY)when you eat and are satisfied, and you build good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and gold increase, and everything that you have increases, 14 then your heart will [y]become proud and you will (AZ)forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [z]slavery; 15 He who led you through (BA)the great and terrible wilderness, with its (BB)fiery serpents and scorpions, and its thirsty ground where there was no water; He who (BC)brought water for you out of the rock of flint. 16 In the wilderness it was He who fed you manna (BD)which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to (BE)put you to the test, to do good for you [aa]in the end. 17 Otherwise, (BF)you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’ 18 But you are to remember the Lord your God, for (BG)it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, in order to confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And it shall come about, if you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and serve and worship them, (BH)I testify against you today that you will certainly perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord eliminates from you, so (BI)you shall perish, because you would not listen to the voice of the Lord your God.

Israel Provoked God

9 “Hear, Israel! You are crossing the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess (BJ)nations greater and mightier than you, cities that are great and (BK)fortified to heaven, 2 a people who are great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘(BL)Who can stand against the sons of Anak?’ 3 So be aware today that (BM)it is the Lord your God who is crossing over ahead of you as (BN)a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that (BO)you may drive them out and eliminate them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you.

4 “(BP)Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God has driven them away from [ab]you, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to take possession of this land.’ Rather, it is (BQ)because of the [ac]wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you. 5 It is (BR)not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to take possession of their land, [ad]but it is because of the [ae]wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and in order to confirm (BS)the [af]oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

6 “Know, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are (BT)a [ag]stubborn people. 7 Remember, do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to anger in the wilderness; (BU)from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8 Even (BV)at Horeb you provoked the Lord to anger, and the Lord was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you. 9 When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I remained on the mountain for forty days and nights; (BW)I neither ate bread nor drank water. 10 The Lord gave me the two tablets of stone (BX)written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the Lord had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 It came about (BY)at the end of forty days and nights that the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 (BZ)Then the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, because your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have behaved corruptly. They have (CA)quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them; they have made a cast metal image for themselves.’ 13 The (CB)Lord also said to [ah]me, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a [ai](CC)stubborn people. 14 (CD)Leave Me alone, that I may destroy them and (CE)wipe out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’

15 “(CF)So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the Lord your God. You had made for yourselves a cast metal image of a calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my two hands, and smashed them to pieces before your eyes! 18 (CG)Then I fell down before the Lord (CH)like the first time, for forty days and nights; (CI)I neither ate bread nor drank water, (CJ)because of all your sin which you had committed by doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. 19 For (CK)I was afraid of the anger and the rage with which the Lord was angry with you so as to destroy you; (CL)but the Lord listened to me that time as well. 20 The Lord was also angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21 (CM)And I took your [aj]sinful thing which you had made, the calf, and burned it in the fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.

22 “Then at (CN)Taberah, at (CO)Massah, and at (CP)Kibroth-hattaavah you kept provoking the Lord to anger. 23 And when the Lord sent you from (CQ)Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘(CR)Go up and take possession of the land which I have given you,’ you rebelled against the [ak]command of the Lord your God; (CS)you neither trusted Him nor listened to His voice. 24 (CT)You have been rebellious toward the Lord since the day I knew you.

25 “(CU)So I fell down before the Lord for the forty days and nights, which I [al]did because the Lord said He would destroy you. 26 (CV)And I prayed to the Lord and said, ‘Lord God, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand! 27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not turn Your attention to the stubbornness of this people, or to their wickedness, or their sin. 28 Otherwise, the people of the land from which You brought us will say, “(CW)Since the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which He had [am]promised them, and since He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness!” 29 Yet they are Your people, and (CX)Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your (CY)great power and Your outstretched arm.’

Driving Out the Nations

7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess(A) and drives out before you many nations(B)—the Hittites,(C) Girgashites,(D) Amorites,(E) Canaanites, Perizzites,(F) Hivites(G) and Jebusites,(H) seven nations larger and stronger than you— 2 and when the Lord your God has delivered(I) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy(J) them totally.[a](K) Make no treaty(L) with them, and show them no mercy.(M) 3 Do not intermarry with them.(N) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4 for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods,(O) and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy(P) you. 5 This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles[b](Q) and burn their idols in the fire.(R) 6 For you are a people holy(S) to the Lord your God.(T) The Lord your God has chosen(U) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.(V)

7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous(W) than other peoples, for you were the fewest(X) of all peoples.(Y) 8 But it was because the Lord loved(Z) you and kept the oath he swore(AA) to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand(AB) and redeemed(AC) you from the land of slavery,(AD) from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God;(AE) he is the faithful God,(AF) keeping his covenant of love(AG) to a thousand generations(AH) of those who love him and keep his commandments.(AI) 10 But

those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
    he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.(AJ)

11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.(AK) 13 He will love you and bless you(AL) and increase your numbers.(AM) He will bless the fruit of your womb,(AN) the crops of your land—your grain, new wine(AO) and olive oil(AP)—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(AQ) 14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.(AR) 15 The Lord will keep you free from every disease.(AS) He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt,(AT) but he will inflict them on all who hate you.(AU) 16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.(AV) Do not look on them with pity(AW) and do not serve their gods,(AX) for that will be a snare(AY) to you.

17 You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?(AZ)” 18 But do not be afraid(BA) of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.(BB) 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand(BC) and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.(BD) 20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet(BE) among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. 21 Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you,(BF) is a great and awesome God.(BG) 22 The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.(BH) You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.(BI) 24 He will give their kings(BJ) into your hand,(BK) and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you;(BL) you will destroy them.(BM) 25 The images of their gods you are to burn(BN) in the fire. Do not covet(BO) the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared(BP) by it, for it is detestable(BQ) to the Lord your God. 26 Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.(BR) Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.

Do Not Forget the Lord

8 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live(BS) and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.(BT) 2 Remember how the Lord your God led(BU) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test(BV) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled(BW) you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna,(BX) which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach(BY) you that man does not live on bread(BZ) alone but on every word that comes from the mouth(CA) of the Lord.(CB) 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.(CC) 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.(CD)

6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him(CE) and revering him.(CF) 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land(CG)—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;(CH) 8 a land with wheat and barley,(CI) vines(CJ) and fig trees,(CK) pomegranates, olive oil and honey;(CL) 9 a land where bread(CM) will not be scarce and you will lack nothing;(CN) a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.(CO)

10 When you have eaten and are satisfied,(CP) praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget(CQ) the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,(CR) 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget(CS) the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness,(CT) that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes(CU) and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.(CV) 16 He gave you manna(CW) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,(CX) to humble and test(CY) you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself,(CZ) “My power and the strength of my hands(DA) have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,(DB) and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods(DC) and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.(DD) 20 Like the nations(DE) the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.(DF)

Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness

9 Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan(DG) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,(DH) with large cities(DI) that have walls up to the sky.(DJ) 2 The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”(DK) 3 But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you(DL) like a devouring fire.(DM) He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly,(DN) as the Lord has promised you.

4 After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself,(DO) “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness(DP) of these nations(DQ) that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity(DR) that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness(DS) of these nations,(DT) the Lord your God will drive them out(DU) before you, to accomplish what he swore(DV) to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.(DW) 6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.(DX)

The Golden Calf

7 Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger(DY) of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious(DZ) against the Lord.(EA) 8 At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath(EB) so that he was angry enough to destroy you.(EC) 9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant(ED) that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days(EE) and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.(EF) 10 The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God.(EG) On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.(EH)

11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights,(EI) the Lord gave me the two stone tablets,(EJ) the tablets of the covenant. 12 Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt.(EK) They have turned away quickly(EL) from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”

13 And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people(EM), and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14 Let me alone,(EN) so that I may destroy them and blot out(EO) their name from under heaven.(EP) And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”

15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.(EQ) 16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.(ER) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.

18 Then once again I fell(ES) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,(ET) because of all the sin you had committed,(EU) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.(EV) But again the Lord listened to me.(EW) 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust(EX) and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.(EY)

22 You also made the Lord angry(EZ) at Taberah,(FA) at Massah(FB) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.(FC)

23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,(FD) he said, “Go up and take possession(FE) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled(FF) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust(FG) him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.(FH)

25 I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights(FI) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.(FJ) 26 I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,(FK) your own inheritance(FL) that you redeemed(FM) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(FN) 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness(FO) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28 Otherwise, the country(FP) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,(FQ) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’(FR) 29 But they are your people,(FS) your inheritance(FT) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.(FU)”

Jesus before Pilate

15 (A)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire [a](B)Council immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate. 2 (C)Pilate questioned Him: “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.” 3 And the chief priests started accusing Him [b]of many things. 4 But Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!” 5 But Jesus (D)said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.

6 (E)Now at the Passover Feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7 And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt. 8 And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9 Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 And responding again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 They shouted [c]back, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate said to them, “Why, what [d]evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (G)flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (H)Now the soldiers took Him away into (I)the [e]palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [f](J)cohort. 17 And they *dressed Him in [g]purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; 18 and they began saluting Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they repeatedly beat His head with a [h]reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the [i]purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 (K)And they *compelled a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to carry His cross.

The Crucifixion

22 (M)Then they *brought Him to the place (N)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him (O)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(P)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [j]lots for them to decide [k]what each man would take. 25 Now it was the [l](Q)third hour [m]when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him [n]read, “(R)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two [o]rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.[p] 29 Those passing by were [q]hurling abuse at Him, (S)shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “(U)He saved others; [r]He cannot save Himself! 32 Let this Christ, (V)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 (X)When the [s](Y)sixth hour came, darkness [t]fell over the whole land until the [u](Z)ninth hour. 34 At the [v](AA)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “(AB)Eloi, Eloi, lema sabaktanei?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[w]Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” 37 (AC)But Jesus let out a loud cry, and [x]died. 38 (AD)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (AE)And when the centurion, who was standing [y]right in front of Him, saw that He [z]died in this way, he said, “Truly this man was [aa]the Son of God!”

40 (AF)Now there were also some women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of [ab]James (AG)the [ac]Less and Joses, and (AH)Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and (AI)serve Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (AJ)When evening had already come, since it was (AK)the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (AL)prominent member of the Council, who was himself also (AM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Now Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45 And after learning this from (AO)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been cut out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (AP)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching to see where He was laid.

Jesus Before Pilate(A)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(B) and the whole Sanhedrin,(C) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(D)

2 “Are you the king of the Jews?”(E) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

5 But Jesus still made no reply,(F) and Pilate was amazed.

6 Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(G) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(H) instead.

12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.

14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(I) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(J)

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(K) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(L) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(M) to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(N)

21 A certain man from Cyrene,(O) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(P) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(Q) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(R) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(S) to see what each would get.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(T)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(U) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(V) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(W) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(X) this king of Israel,(Y) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(Z)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(AA) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](AB)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(AC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(AD)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(AE) 39 And when the centurion,(AF) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(AG)

40 Some women were watching from a distance.(AH) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(AI) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(AJ)

The Burial of Jesus(AK)

42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(AL) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(AM) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(AN) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(AO) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(AP) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(AQ) saw where he was laid.
