¹¹ That day Moses charged the people, saying, ¹² “When you have crossed over the Jordan, ^(A)these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. ¹³ And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. ¹⁴ And ^(B)the Levites shall declare to all the men of Israel in a loud voice:

^15 (C)“‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the Lord, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ ^(D)And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’

^16 (E)“‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^17 (F)“‘Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor's landmark.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^18 (G)“‘Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^19 (H)“‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^20 (I)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his father's wife, because he has ^(J)uncovered his father's nakedness.’^[a] And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^21 (K)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with any kind of animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^22 (L)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^23 (M)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^24 (N)“‘Cursed be anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^25 (O)“‘Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^26 (P)“‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

^38 [a] “Because of all this ^(A)we make a firm covenant in writing; on ^(B)the sealed document are the names of^[b] our princes, our Levites, and our priests.

The People Who Sealed the Covenant

10 ^{[c] (C)}“On the seals are the names of^[d] Nehemiah ^(D)the governor, ^(E)the son of Hacaliah, Zedekiah, ^2 (F)Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah, ³ Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah, ^4 (G)Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, ⁵ Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah, ⁶ Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch, ⁷ Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin, ⁸ Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah; these are the priests. ⁹ And the Levites: ^(H)Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of ^(I)Henadad, Kadmiel; ¹⁰ and their brothers, Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan, ¹¹ Mica, Rehob, Hashabiah, ¹² Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah, ¹³ Hodiah, Bani, Beninu. ¹⁴ The chiefs of the people: ^(J)Parosh, Pahath-moab, Elam, Zattu, Bani, ¹⁵ Bunni, Azgad, Bebai, ¹⁶ Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin, ¹⁷ Ater, Hezekiah, Azzur, ¹⁸ Hodiah, Hashum, Bezai, ¹⁹ Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai, ²⁰ Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir, ²¹ Meshezabel, Zadok, Jaddua, ²² Pelatiah, Hanan, Anaiah, ²³ Hoshea, Hananiah, Hasshub, ²⁴ Hallohesh, Pilha, Shobek, ²⁵ Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah, ²⁶ Ahiah, Hanan, Anan, ²⁷ Malluch, Harim, Baanah.

A Vision of Joshua the High Priest

3 Then he showed me ^(A)Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and ^(B)Satan^[a] standing at his right hand to accuse him. ² And the Lord said to Satan, ^(C)“The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has ^(D)chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this ^(E)a brand^[b] plucked from the fire?” ³ Now ^(F)Joshua was standing before the angel, ^(G)clothed with filthy garments. ⁴ And the angel said to ^(H)those who were standing before him, ^(I)“Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, ^(J)I have taken your iniquity away from you, and ^(K)I will clothe you with pure vestments.” ⁵ And I said, ^(L)“Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by.

⁶ And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured ^(M)Joshua, ⁷ “Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and ^(N)keep my charge, then you shall ^(O)rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among ^(P)those who are standing here. ⁸ Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for ^(Q)they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring ^(R)my servant ^(S)the Branch. ⁹ For behold, on ^(T)the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with ^(U)seven eyes,^[c] I will ^(V)engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and ^(W)I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. ¹⁰ In that day, declares the Lord of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come ^(X)under his vine and under his fig tree.”

¹⁵ In my ^(A)vain^[a] life I have seen everything. There is ^(B)a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who ^(C)prolongs his life in his evildoing. ¹⁶ Be not overly righteous, and do not ^(D)make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself? ¹⁷ Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. ^(E)Why should you die before your time? ¹⁸ It is good that you should take hold of ^(F)this, and from ^(G)that ^(H)withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.

^19 (I)Wisdom gives strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.

²⁰ Surely ^(J)there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

²¹ Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear ^(K)your servant cursing you. ²² Your heart knows that ^(L)many times you yourself have cursed others.

²³ All this I have tested by wisdom. ^(M)I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me. ²⁴ That which has been is far off, and ^(N)deep, very deep; ^(O)who can find it out?

^25 (P)I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness. ²⁶ And I find something more ^(Q)bitter than death: ^(R)the woman whose heart is ^(S)snares and nets, and whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God escapes her, but ^(T)the sinner is taken by her. ²⁷ Behold, this is what I found, says ^(U)the Preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things— ²⁸ which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. ^(V)One man among a thousand I found, but ^(W)a woman among all these I have not found. ²⁹ See, this alone I found, that ^(X)God made man upright, but ^(Y)they have sought out many schemes.

I Have Overcome the World

²⁵ “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. ^(A)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. ²⁶ In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; ^27 (B)for the Father himself loves you, because ^(C)you have loved me and ^(D)have believed that I came from God.^{[a] 28 (E)}I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now ^(F)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

²⁹ His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not ^(G)using figurative speech! ³⁰ Now we know that ^(H)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^(I)you came from God.” ³¹ Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? ³² Behold, ^(J)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when ^(K)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and ^(L)will leave me alone. ^(M)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. ³³ I have said these things to you, that ^(N)in me you may have peace. ^(O)In the world you will have ^(P)tribulation. But ^(Q)take heart; ^(R)I have overcome the world.”

The Second Beast

¹¹ Then ^(A)I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. ¹² It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,^[a] and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, ^(B)whose mortal wound was healed. ^13 (C)It performs great signs, even ^(D)making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, ¹⁴ and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of^[b] the beast ^(E)it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast ^(F)that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. ¹⁵ And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not ^(G)worship the image of the beast ^(H)to be slain. ¹⁶ Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave,^{[c] (I)}to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, ¹⁷ so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, ^(J)the name of the beast or ^(K)the number of its name. ^18 (L)This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number ^(M)of a man, and his number is 666.^[d]
