21 Do not eat anything you find already dead.(A) You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the Lord your God.(B)

Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.(C)

Tithes

22 Be sure to set aside a tenth(D) of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat(E) the tithe of your grain, new wine(F) and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name,(G) so that you may learn(H) to revere(I) the Lord your God always. 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange(J) your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink,(K) or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice.(L) 27 And do not neglect the Levites(M) living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.(N)

28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes(O) of that year’s produce and store it in your towns,(P) 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment(Q) or inheritance(R) of their own) and the foreigners,(S) the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied,(T) and so that the Lord your God may bless(U) you in all the work of your hands.

The Year for Canceling Debts(V)

15 At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.(W) This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. You may require payment from a foreigner,(X) but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you. However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless(Y) you, if only you fully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow(Z) all these commands I am giving you today. For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you.(AA)

If anyone is poor(AB) among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted(AC) toward them. Rather, be openhanded(AD) and freely lend them whatever they need. Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh year, the year for canceling debts,(AE) is near,” so that you do not show ill will(AF) toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.(AG) 10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart;(AH) then because of this the Lord your God will bless(AI) you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. 11 There will always be poor people(AJ) in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.(AK)

Freeing Servants(AL)(AM)

12 If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free.(AN) 13 And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. 14 Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor(AO) and your winepress. Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were slaves(AP) in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you.(AQ) That is why I give you this command today.

16 But if your servant says to you, “I do not want to leave you,” because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your female servant.

18 Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.

The Firstborn Animals

19 Set apart for the Lord(AR) your God every firstborn male(AS) of your herds and flocks.(AT) Do not put the firstborn of your cows to work, and do not shear the firstborn of your sheep.(AU) 20 Each year you and your family are to eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose.(AV) 21 If an animal has a defect,(AW) is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw, you must not sacrifice it to the Lord your God.(AX) 22 You are to eat it in your own towns. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it, as if it were gazelle or deer.(AY) 23 But you must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.(AZ)

I said, “Have mercy(A) on me, Lord;
    heal(B) me, for I have sinned(C) against you.”
My enemies say of me in malice,
    “When will he die and his name perish?(D)
When one of them comes to see me,
    he speaks falsely,(E) while his heart gathers slander;(F)
    then he goes out and spreads(G) it around.

All my enemies whisper together(H) against me;
    they imagine the worst for me, saying,
“A vile disease has afflicted him;
    he will never get up(I) from the place where he lies.”
Even my close friend,(J)
    someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
    has turned[a] against me.(K)

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 41:9 Hebrew has lifted up his heel

A Lamp on a Stand

16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(A) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(B) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(C)

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(D)

19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(E) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”

21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”(F)

Jesus Calms the Storm(G)(H)

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(I) we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked(J) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(K) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
