David King over All Israel

(A)Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and [a]said, “Behold, we are (B)your bone and your flesh. Previously, when Saul was king over us, (C)you were the one who led Israel [b]out and in. And the Lord said to you, ‘(D)You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be (E)a leader over Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David (F)made a covenant with them before the Lord in Hebron; then (G)they anointed David king over Israel.

David Made King over All Israel

11 (A)Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron [a]and said, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the Lord your God said to you, ‘(B)You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be leader over My people Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord; and (C)they anointed David king over Israel, (D)in accordance with the word of the Lord through Samuel.

Supporters Gathered at Hebron

23 Now these are the numbers of the [a]divisions equipped for war, (A)who came to David at Hebron, (B)to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, (C)according to the [b]word of the Lord. 24 The sons of Judah who carried shield and spear numbered 6,800, equipped for war. 25 From the sons of Simeon, valiant mighty men of war, 7,100. 26 From the sons of Levi, 4,600. 27 Now Jehoiada was the leader of the house of Aaron, and with him were 3,700, 28 also (D)Zadok, a young valiant mighty man, and from his father’s house, twenty-two captains. 29 From the sons of Benjamin, (E)Saul’s kinsmen, three thousand; for until now (F)the majority of them had kept their allegiance to the house of Saul. 30 From the sons of Ephraim 20,800, valiant mighty men, famous men in their fathers’ households. 31 From the half-tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, who were designated by name to come and make David king. 32 From the sons of Issachar, (G)men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their kinsmen were at their command. 33 From Zebulun, there were fifty thousand who went out in the army, who could draw up in battle formation with all kinds of weapons of war and helped David [c]with (H)an undivided heart. 34 From Naphtali there were a thousand captains, and with them thirty-seven thousand with shield and spear. 35 From the Danites who could draw up in battle formation, there were 28,600. 36 From Asher there were forty thousand who went out in the army to draw up in battle formation. 37 From the other side of the Jordan, from the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, there were 120,000 with all kinds of weapons of war for the battle.

38 All of these, being men of war who helped in battle formation, came to Hebron with (I)a perfect heart to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel also were of one mind to make David king. 39 They were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their kinsmen had prepared for them. 40 Moreover, those who were near to them, as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, (J)brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and on oxen, great quantities of flour cakes, fig cakes and bunches of raisins, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep. There was joy indeed in Israel.

War with the Philistines

17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, (A)all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard about it, he went down to the (B)stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines came and overran (C)the Valley of Rephaim. 19 So (D)David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You hand them over to me?” And (E)the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly hand the Philistines over to you.” 20 Then David came to (F)Baal-perazim and [a]defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place [b]Baal-perazim. 21 And the Philistines abandoned their idols there, so (G)David and his men carried them away.

22 Now (H)the Philistines came up once again and overran the Valley of Rephaim. 23 So (I)David inquired of the Lord, but He said, “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the baka-shrubs. 24 And it shall be, when (J)you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baka-shrubs, then you shall [c]act promptly, for then (K)the Lord will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.” 25 Then David did so, just as the Lord had commanded him; he struck and killed the Philistines from [d](L)Geba [e]as far as (M)Gezer.

Philistines Defeated

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; and David heard about it and went out against them. Now the Philistines had come and (A)carried out a raid in the Valley of Rephaim. 10 David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You hand them over to me?” Then the Lord said to him, “Go up, for I will hand them over to you.” 11 So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David [a]defeated them there; and David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore they named that place [b]Baal-perazim. 12 They abandoned their gods there; so David gave the order and they were burned with fire.

13 The Philistines carried out (B)yet another raid in the valley. 14 David inquired again of God, and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; circle around [c]behind them and come at them in front of the baka-shrubs. 15 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baka-shrubs, then you shall go out to battle, for God will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.” 16 David did just as God had commanded him, and they defeated the army of the Philistines from [d]Gibeon even as far as Gezer. 17 Then the fame of David spread in all the lands; and (C)the Lord brought the fear of him on all the nations.

(A)Now the king and his men went to (B)Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land; and they said to [a]David, “You shall not come in here, but even those who are blind and those who limp will turn you away,” [b]thinking, “David cannot enter here.” Nevertheless, David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is, (C)the city of David. And David said on that day, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites is to reach those who limp and those who are blind, who are hated by David’s soul, through the water tunnel.” For that reason they say, “People who are blind and people who limp shall not come into the house.” So David lived in the stronghold, and called it (D)the city of David. And David built all around from the [c](E)Millo and inward. 10 (F)David became greater and greater, for the Lord God of armies was with him.

Jerusalem Is the Capital City

Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem ((A)that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not enter here.” Nevertheless David took the mountain stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David). Now David had said, “Whoever is first to [a]kill a Jebusite shall be chief and commander.” (B)Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. Then David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. He [b]built the city all around, from the [c]Millo to the surrounding area; and Joab [d]repaired the rest of the city. (C)And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of armies was with him.

Peril in Transporting the Ark

13 Then David consulted with the captains of the thousands and the hundreds, with every leader. David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is from the Lord our God, [a]let us send word everywhere to our kinsmen who remain in all the land of Israel, and to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they meet with us; and [b]let us bring back the ark of our God to us, (A)since we did not seek it in the days of Saul.” Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for [c]this was right in the eyes of all the people.

(B)So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath, (C)to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.

Peril in Moving the Ark

(A)Now David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David [a]departed from [b](B)Baale-judah, with all the people who were with him, to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the (C)Name, the very name of the Lord of armies who (D)is [c]enthroned above the cherubim. They had mounted the ark of God on (E)a new cart and moved it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart. So (F)they brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Ahio was walking ahead of the ark. Meanwhile, David and all the house of Israel (G)were celebrating before the Lord (H)with all kinds of instruments made of juniper wood, and with [d]lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.

But when they came to the (I)threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah (J)reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, because the oxen nearly overturned it. And the anger of the Lord burned against Uzzah, and (K)God struck him down there for [e]his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God. Then David became angry because [f]of the Lords outburst against Uzzah; and that place has been called [g]Perez-uzzah to this day. So (L)David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 And David was unwilling to move the ark of the Lord into the city of David with him; but David took it aside to the house of (M)Obed-edom, the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord (N)blessed Obed-edom and all his household.

(A)David and all Israel went up to (B)Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the Lord (C)who is enthroned above the cherubim, where His name is called. And they [a]carried the ark of God on a new cart from (D)the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart. David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, (E)with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.

When they came to (F)the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, because the oxen nearly overturned it. 10 But the anger of the Lord burned against Uzza, so He struck him (G)because he had put out his hand toward the ark; (H)and he died there before God. 11 Then David became angry because [b]of the Lords outburst against Uzza; and he called that place [c]Perez-uzza as it is to this day. 12 David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?” 13 So David did not take the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside (I)to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14 And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house for three months; and (J)the Lord blessed the family of Obed-edom and all that he had.
