²⁷ The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Do you understand?^(A) Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar’s son Jonathan.^(B) You and Abiathar return with your two sons.

³⁶ Their two sons, Ahimaaz^(A) son of Zadok and Jonathan^(B) son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with anything you hear.”

¹⁷ Jonathan^(A) and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel.^(B) A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city.

²⁰ When Absalom’s men came to the woman^(A) at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”

The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”^[a] The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.
