Reinado de Manasés

(2 Cr. 33.1-20)

21 De doce años era Manasés cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén cincuenta y cinco años; el nombre de su madre fue Hepsiba. 2 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová,(A) según las abominaciones de las naciones que Jehová había echado de delante de los hijos de Israel. 3 Porque volvió a edificar los lugares altos que Ezequías su padre había derribado, y levantó altares a Baal, e hizo una imagen de Asera, como había hecho Acab rey de Israel; y adoró a todo el ejército de los cielos, y rindió culto a aquellas cosas. 4 Asimismo edificó altares en la casa de Jehová, de la cual Jehová había dicho: Yo pondré mi nombre en Jerusalén.(B) 5 Y edificó altares para todo el ejército de los cielos en los dos atrios de la casa de Jehová. 6 Y pasó a su hijo por fuego, y se dio a observar los tiempos, y fue agorero, e instituyó encantadores y adivinos, multiplicando así el hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, para provocarlo a ira. 7 Y puso una imagen de Asera que él había hecho, en la casa de la cual Jehová había dicho a David y a Salomón su hijo: Yo pondré mi nombre para siempre en esta casa, y en Jerusalén, a la cual escogí de todas las tribus de Israel; 8 y no volveré a hacer que el pie de Israel sea movido de la tierra que di a sus padres, con tal que guarden y hagan conforme a todas las cosas que yo les he mandado, y conforme a toda la ley que mi siervo Moisés les mandó.(C) 9 Mas ellos no escucharon; y Manasés los indujo a que hiciesen más mal que las naciones que Jehová destruyó delante de los hijos de Israel.

10 Habló, pues, Jehová por medio de sus siervos los profetas, diciendo: 11 Por cuanto Manasés rey de Judá ha hecho estas abominaciones, y ha hecho más mal que todo lo que hicieron los amorreos que fueron antes de él, y también ha hecho pecar a Judá con sus ídolos; 12 por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová el Dios de Israel: He aquí yo traigo tal mal sobre Jerusalén y sobre Judá, que al que lo oyere le retiñirán ambos oídos. 13 Y extenderé sobre Jerusalén el cordel de Samaria y la plomada de la casa de Acab; y limpiaré a Jerusalén como se limpia un plato, que se friega y se vuelve boca abajo. 14 Y desampararé el resto de mi heredad, y lo entregaré en manos de sus enemigos; y serán para presa y despojo de todos sus adversarios; 15 por cuanto han hecho lo malo ante mis ojos, y me han provocado a ira, desde el día que sus padres salieron de Egipto hasta hoy.

16 Fuera de esto, derramó Manasés mucha sangre inocente en gran manera, hasta llenar a Jerusalén de extremo a extremo; además de su pecado con que hizo pecar a Judá, para que hiciese lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová.

17 Los demás hechos de Manasés, y todo lo que hizo, y el pecado que cometió, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 18 Y durmió Manasés con sus padres, y fue sepultado en el huerto de su casa, en el huerto de Uza, y reinó en su lugar Amón su hijo.

Reinado de Amón

(2 Cr. 33.21-25)

19 De veintidós años era Amón cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó dos años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Mesulemet hija de Haruz, de Jotba. 20 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, como había hecho Manasés su padre. 21 Y anduvo en todos los caminos en que su padre anduvo, y sirvió a los ídolos a los cuales había servido su padre, y los adoró; 22 y dejó a Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y no anduvo en el camino de Jehová. 23 Y los siervos de Amón conspiraron contra él, y mataron al rey en su casa. 24 Entonces el pueblo de la tierra mató a todos los que habían conspirado contra el rey Amón; y puso el pueblo de la tierra por rey en su lugar a Josías su hijo. 25 Los demás hechos de Amón, ¿no están todos escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 26 Y fue sepultado en su sepulcro en el huerto de Uza, y reinó en su lugar Josías su hijo.

Reinado de Josías

(2 Cr. 34.1-2)

22 Cuando Josías(D) comenzó a reinar era de ocho años, y reinó en Jerusalén treinta y un años. El nombre de su madre fue Jedida hija de Adaía, de Boscat. 2 E hizo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová, y anduvo en todo el camino de David su padre, sin apartarse a derecha ni a izquierda.

Hallazgo del libro de la ley

(2 Cr. 34.8-33)

3 A los dieciocho años del rey Josías, envió el rey a Safán hijo de Azalía, hijo de Mesulam, escriba, a la casa de Jehová, diciendo: 4 Ve al sumo sacerdote Hilcías, y dile que recoja el dinero que han traído a la casa de Jehová, que han recogido del pueblo los guardianes de la puerta, 5 y que lo pongan en manos de los que hacen la obra, que tienen a su cargo el arreglo de la casa de Jehová, y que lo entreguen a los que hacen la obra de la casa de Jehová, para reparar las grietas de la casa; 6 a los carpinteros, maestros y albañiles, para comprar madera y piedra de cantería para reparar la casa; 7 y que no se les tome cuenta del dinero cuyo manejo se les confiare, porque ellos proceden con honradez.

8 Entonces dijo el sumo sacerdote Hilcías al escriba Safán: He hallado el libro de la ley en la casa de Jehová. E Hilcías dio el libro a Safán, y lo leyó. 9 Viniendo luego el escriba Safán al rey, dio cuenta al rey y dijo: Tus siervos han recogido el dinero que se halló en el templo, y lo han entregado en poder de los que hacen la obra, que tienen a su cargo el arreglo de la casa de Jehová. 10 Asimismo el escriba Safán declaró al rey, diciendo: El sacerdote Hilcías me ha dado un libro. Y lo leyó Safán delante del rey.

11 Y cuando el rey hubo oído las palabras del libro de la ley, rasgó sus vestidos. 12 Luego el rey dio orden al sacerdote Hilcías, a Ahicam hijo de Safán, a Acbor hijo de Micaías, al escriba Safán y a Asaías siervo del rey, diciendo: 13 Id y preguntad a Jehová por mí, y por el pueblo, y por todo Judá, acerca de las palabras de este libro que se ha hallado; porque grande es la ira de Jehová que se ha encendido contra nosotros, por cuanto nuestros padres no escucharon las palabras de este libro, para hacer conforme a todo lo que nos fue escrito.

14 Entonces fueron el sacerdote Hilcías, y Ahicam, Acbor, Safán y Asaías, a la profetisa Hulda, mujer de Salum hijo de Ticva, hijo de Harhas, guarda de las vestiduras, la cual moraba en Jerusalén en la segunda parte de la ciudad, y hablaron con ella. 15 Y ella les dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová el Dios de Israel: Decid al varón que os envió a mí: 16 Así dijo Jehová: He aquí yo traigo sobre este lugar, y sobre los que en él moran, todo el mal de que habla este libro que ha leído el rey de Judá; 17 por cuanto me dejaron a mí, y quemaron incienso a dioses ajenos, provocándome a ira con toda la obra de sus manos; mi ira se ha encendido contra este lugar, y no se apagará. 18 Mas al rey de Judá que os ha enviado para que preguntaseis a Jehová, diréis así: Así ha dicho Jehová el Dios de Israel: Por cuanto oíste las palabras del libro, 19 y tu corazón se enterneció, y te humillaste delante de Jehová, cuando oíste lo que yo he pronunciado contra este lugar y contra sus moradores, que vendrán a ser asolados y malditos, y rasgaste tus vestidos, y lloraste en mi presencia, también yo te he oído, dice Jehová. 20 Por tanto, he aquí yo te recogeré con tus padres, y serás llevado a tu sepulcro en paz, y no verán tus ojos todo el mal que yo traigo sobre este lugar. Y ellos dieron al rey la respuesta.

23 Entonces el rey mandó reunir con él a todos los ancianos de Judá y de Jerusalén. 2 Y subió el rey a la casa de Jehová con todos los varones de Judá, y con todos los moradores de Jerusalén, con los sacerdotes y profetas y con todo el pueblo, desde el más chico hasta el más grande; y leyó, oyéndolo ellos, todas las palabras del libro del pacto que había sido hallado en la casa de Jehová. 3 Y poniéndose el rey en pie junto a la columna, hizo pacto delante de Jehová, de que irían en pos de Jehová, y guardarían sus mandamientos, sus testimonios y sus estatutos, con todo el corazón y con toda el alma, y que cumplirían las palabras del pacto que estaban escritas en aquel libro. Y todo el pueblo confirmó el pacto.

Reformas de Josías

(2 Cr. 34.3-7)

4 Entonces mandó el rey al sumo sacerdote Hilcías, a los sacerdotes de segundo orden, y a los guardianes de la puerta, que sacasen del templo de Jehová todos los utensilios que habían sido hechos para Baal, para Asera y para todo el ejército de los cielos; y los quemó fuera de Jerusalén en el campo del Cedrón, e hizo llevar las cenizas de ellos a Bet-el. 5 Y quitó a los sacerdotes idólatras que habían puesto los reyes de Judá para que quemasen incienso en los lugares altos en las ciudades de Judá, y en los alrededores de Jerusalén; y asimismo a los que quemaban incienso a Baal, al sol y a la luna, y a los signos del zodíaco, y a todo el ejército de los cielos. 6 Hizo también sacar la imagen de Asera fuera de la casa de Jehová, fuera de Jerusalén, al valle del Cedrón, y la quemó en el valle del Cedrón, y la convirtió en polvo, y echó el polvo sobre los sepulcros de los hijos del pueblo.(E) 7 Además derribó los lugares de prostitución idolátrica que estaban en la casa de Jehová, en los cuales tejían las mujeres tiendas para Asera. 8 E hizo venir todos los sacerdotes de las ciudades de Judá, y profanó los lugares altos donde los sacerdotes quemaban incienso, desde Geba hasta Beerseba; y derribó los altares de las puertas que estaban a la entrada de la puerta de Josué, gobernador de la ciudad, que estaban a la mano izquierda, a la puerta de la ciudad. 9 Pero los sacerdotes de los lugares altos no subían al altar de Jehová en Jerusalén, sino que comían panes sin levadura entre sus hermanos. 10 Asimismo profanó a Tofet, que está en el valle del hijo de Hinom,(F) para que ninguno pasase su hijo o su hija por fuego a Moloc.(G) 11 Quitó también los caballos que los reyes de Judá habían dedicado al sol a la entrada del templo de Jehová, junto a la cámara de Natán-melec eunuco, el cual tenía a su cargo los ejidos; y quemó al fuego los carros del sol. 12 Derribó además el rey los altares que estaban sobre la azotea de la sala de Acaz, que los reyes de Judá habían hecho, y los altares que había hecho Manasés en los dos atrios de la casa de Jehová;(H) y de allí corrió y arrojó el polvo al arroyo del Cedrón. 13 Asimismo profanó el rey los lugares altos que estaban delante de Jerusalén, a la mano derecha del monte de la destrucción, los cuales Salomón rey de Israel había edificado a Astoret ídolo abominable de los sidonios, a Quemos ídolo abominable de Moab, y a Milcom ídolo abominable de los hijos de Amón.(I) 14 Y quebró las estatuas, y derribó las imágenes de Asera, y llenó el lugar de ellos de huesos de hombres.

15 Igualmente el altar que estaba en Bet-el, y el lugar alto que había hecho Jeroboam hijo de Nabat,(J) el que hizo pecar a Israel; aquel altar y el lugar alto destruyó, y lo quemó, y lo hizo polvo, y puso fuego a la imagen de Asera. 16 Y se volvió Josías, y viendo los sepulcros que estaban allí en el monte, envió y sacó los huesos de los sepulcros, y los quemó sobre el altar para contaminarlo, conforme a la palabra de Jehová que había profetizado el varón de Dios, el cual había anunciado esto.(K) 17 Después dijo: ¿Qué monumento es este que veo? Y los de la ciudad le respondieron: Este es el sepulcro del varón de Dios que vino de Judá, y profetizó estas cosas que tú has hecho sobre el altar de Bet-el.(L) 18 Y él dijo: Dejadlo; ninguno mueva sus huesos; y así fueron preservados sus huesos, y los huesos del profeta que había venido de Samaria. 19 Y todas las casas de los lugares altos que estaban en las ciudades de Samaria, las cuales habían hecho los reyes de Israel para provocar a ira, las quitó también Josías, e hizo de ellas como había hecho en Bet-el. 20 Mató además sobre los altares a todos los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que allí estaban, y quemó sobre ellos huesos de hombres, y volvió a Jerusalén.

Josías celebra la pascua

(2 Cr. 35.1-19)

21 Entonces mandó el rey a todo el pueblo, diciendo: Haced la pascua a Jehová vuestro Dios, conforme a lo que está escrito en el libro de este pacto. 22 No había sido hecha tal pascua desde los tiempos en que los jueces gobernaban a Israel, ni en todos los tiempos de los reyes de Israel y de los reyes de Judá. 23 A los dieciocho años del rey Josías fue hecha aquella pascua a Jehová en Jerusalén.

Persiste la ira de Jehová contra Judá

24 Asimismo barrió Josías a los encantadores, adivinos y terafines, y todas las abominaciones que se veían en la tierra de Judá y en Jerusalén, para cumplir las palabras de la ley que estaban escritas en el libro que el sacerdote Hilcías había hallado en la casa de Jehová. 25 No hubo otro rey antes de él, que se convirtiese a Jehová de todo su corazón, de toda su alma y de todas sus fuerzas, conforme a toda la ley de Moisés; ni después de él nació otro igual. 26 Con todo eso, Jehová no desistió del ardor con que su gran ira se había encendido contra Judá, por todas las provocaciones con que Manasés le había irritado. 27 Y dijo Jehová: También quitaré de mi presencia a Judá, como quité a Israel, y desecharé a esta ciudad que había escogido, a Jerusalén, y a la casa de la cual había yo dicho: Mi nombre estará allí.

Muerte de Josías

(2 Cr. 35.20-27)

28 Los demás hechos de Josías, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 29 En aquellos días Faraón Necao rey de Egipto subió contra el rey de Asiria al río Éufrates, y salió contra él el rey Josías; pero aquel, así que le vio, lo mató en Meguido. 30 Y sus siervos lo pusieron en un carro, y lo trajeron muerto de Meguido a Jerusalén, y lo sepultaron en su sepulcro. Entonces el pueblo de la tierra tomó a Joacaz hijo de Josías, y lo ungieron y lo pusieron por rey en lugar de su padre.

Reinado y destronamiento de Joacaz

(2 Cr. 36.1-4)

31 De veintitrés años era Joacaz cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó tres meses en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Hamutal hija de Jeremías, de Libna. 32 Y él hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que sus padres habían hecho. 33 Y lo puso preso Faraón Necao en Ribla en la provincia de Hamat, para que no reinase en Jerusalén; e impuso sobre la tierra una multa de cien talentos de plata, y uno de oro. 34 Entonces Faraón Necao puso por rey a Eliaquim hijo de Josías, en lugar de Josías su padre, y le cambió el nombre por el de Joacim; y tomó a Joacaz y lo llevó a Egipto, y murió allí.(M) 35 Y Joacim pagó a Faraón la plata y el oro; mas hizo avaluar la tierra para dar el dinero conforme al mandamiento de Faraón, sacando la plata y el oro del pueblo de la tierra, de cada uno según la estimación de su hacienda, para darlo a Faraón Necao.

Reinado de Joacim

(2 Cr. 36.5-8)

36 De veinticinco años era Joacim(N) cuando comenzó a reinar, y once años reinó en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Zebuda hija de Pedaías, de Ruma. 37 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que sus padres habían hecho.

Manasseh Succeeds Hezekiah

21 (A)Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Hephzibah. 2 (B)He did evil in the sight of the Lord, (C)in accordance with the abominations of the nations whom the Lord [a]dispossessed before the sons of Israel. 3 For (D)he rebuilt the high places which his father Hezekiah had destroyed; and (E)he erected altars for Baal and made an [b]Asherah, just as Ahab king of Israel had done, and he (F)worshiped all the heavenly [c]lights and served them. 4 And (G)he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “(H)In Jerusalem I will put My name.” 5 He built altars for (I)all the heavenly [d]lights in (J)the two courtyards of the house of the Lord. 6 And (K)he made his son pass through the fire, (L)interpreted signs, practiced divination, and used mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger. 7 Then (M)he put the carved image of Asherah that he had made in the house of which the Lord had said to David and to his son Solomon, “(N)In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever. 8 And I (O)will not make the feet of Israel wander anymore from the land which I gave their fathers, if only they will take care to act in accordance with everything that I have commanded them, and with all the Law that My servant Moses commanded them.” 9 But they did not listen, and Manasseh (P)encouraged them to do evil, more than the nations whom the Lord eliminated from the presence of the sons of Israel.

The King’s Idolatries Rebuked

10 Now the Lord spoke through His servants the prophets, saying, 11 “(Q)Since Manasseh king of Judah has committed these abominations, (R)having done more evil than all that the Amorites did who were before him, and (S)has also misled Judah into sin (T)with his idols, 12 therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Behold, I am bringing such a disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that whoever hears about it, (U)both of his ears will ring. 13 (V)I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab, and I will wipe Jerusalem clean just as one wipes a bowl, wiping it and turning it upside down. 14 And I will abandon the remnant of My inheritance and hand them over to their enemies, and they will become as plunder and spoils to all their enemies, 15 because they have done evil in My sight, and have been provoking Me to anger since the day their fathers came from Egypt, even to this day.’”

16 (W)Furthermore, Manasseh shed very much innocent blood until he had filled Jerusalem [e]from one end to another, besides his sin (X)into which he misled Judah, in doing evil in the sight of the Lord. 17 (Y)Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh and all that he did, and his sin which he [f]committed, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 18 (Z)And Manasseh [g]lay down with his fathers and was buried in the garden of his own house, (AA)in the garden of Uzza, and his son Amon became king in his place.

Amon Succeeds Manasseh

19 (AB)Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Meshullemeth the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah. 20 He did evil in the sight of the Lord, (AC)just as his father Manasseh had done. 21 For he walked [h]entirely in the way that his father had walked, and served the idols that his father had served, and worshiped them. 22 So (AD)he abandoned the Lord, the God of his fathers, and did not walk in the way of the Lord. 23 And (AE)the servants of Amon conspired against him and killed the king in his own house. 24 Then (AF)the people of the land [i]killed all those who had conspired against King Amon, and the people of the land made his son Josiah king in his place. 25 Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 26 He was buried in his grave (AG)in the garden of Uzza, and his son Josiah became king in his place.

Josiah Succeeds Amon

22 (AH)Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of (AI)Bozkath. 2 He did what was right in the sight of the Lord and walked [j]entirely in the way of his father David, and did not (AJ)turn aside to the right or to the left.

3 Now (AK)in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam the scribe, to the house of the Lord, saying, 4 “(AL)Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, and have him [k]count all the money brought into the house of the Lord, which the doorkeepers have collected from the people. 5 (AM)And have them hand it over to the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the Lord, and have them give it to the workmen who are in the house of the Lord to repair the [l]damage to the house: 6 to the carpenters, the builders, the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house. 7 However, (AN)no accounting shall be made with them for the money handed over to them, because they deal honestly.”

The Lost Book

8 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “(AO)I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, who read it. 9 Then Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought back word to the king and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have handed it over to the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the Lord.” 10 Moreover, Shaphan the scribe informed the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.

11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, (AP)he tore his clothes. 12 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, (AQ)Ahikam the son of Shaphan, [m](AR)Achbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 13 “Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for the people and all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for (AS)the wrath of the Lord that burns against us is great, because our fathers did not listen to the words of this book, to act in accordance with everything that is written regarding us.”

Huldah Predicts

14 So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of [n](AT)Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (and she lived in Jerusalem in the (AU)Second Quarter); and they spoke to her. 15 Then she said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Tell the man who sent you to Me, 16 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Behold, I am going to (AV)bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants, all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read. 17 (AW)Since they have abandoned Me and have burned incense to other gods so that they may provoke Me to anger with all the work of their hands, My wrath burns against this place, and it shall not be quenched.’” 18 But to (AX)the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the Lord, this is what you shall say to him: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Regarding the words which you have heard, 19 (AY)since your heart was tender and (AZ)you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become (BA)an object of horror and a (BB)curse, and you have (BC)torn your clothes and wept before Me, I have indeed heard you,’ declares the Lord.” 20 Therefore, behold, I am going to gather you to your fathers, and (BD)you will be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes will not look at all the devastation that I am going to bring on this place.’” So they brought back word to the king.

Josiah’s Covenant

23 (BE)Then the king sent messengers, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 2 And the king went up to the house of the Lord and every man of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, the prophets, and all the people, from the small to the great; and (BF)he read in their [o]presence all the words of the Book of the Covenant (BG)which was found in the house of the Lord. 3 And (BH)the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, (BI)to walk after the Lord, and to keep His commandments, His provisions, and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people [p]entered into the covenant.

Reforms under Josiah

4 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, (BJ)the priests of the second order, and the [q]doorkeepers (BK)to bring out of the temple of the Lord all the utensils that had been made for Baal, for [r]Asherah, and for all the heavenly [s]lights; and (BL)he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley, and carried their ashes to Bethel. 5 Then he did away with the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had appointed to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah and in the surrounding area of Jerusalem, as well as those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun, to the moon, to the constellations, and to all the remaining (BM)heavenly [t]lights. 6 He also brought out the Asherah from the house of the Lord outside Jerusalem to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and (BN)ground it to dust, and (BO)threw its dust on the graves of the [u]common people. 7 And he tore down the cubicles of the (BP)male cult prostitutes which were in the house of the Lord, where (BQ)the women were weaving [v]hangings for the Asherah. 8 Then he brought all the priests from the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from (BR)Geba to Beersheba; and he tore down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on one’s left at the city gate. 9 Nevertheless (BS)the priests of the high places did not go up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, but they ate unleavened bread among their brothers. 10 (BT)He also defiled [w]Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, (BU)so that no one would make his son or his daughter pass through the fire for (BV)Molech. 11 And he did away with the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the (BW)sun, at the entrance of the house of the Lord, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the official, which was at the [x]covered courtyard; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire. 12 The king also tore down (BX)the altars that were on the roof, the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and (BY)the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courtyards of the house of the Lord; and he [y]smashed them there and (BZ)threw their dust into the brook Kidron. 13 And the king defiled the high places that were opposite Jerusalem, which were on the right of (CA)the mount of destruction which Solomon the king of Israel had built for (CB)Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, for (CC)Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the sons of Ammon. 14 (CD)He also smashed to pieces the memorial stones and cut down the [z]Asherim, and (CE)filled their places with human bones.

15 Furthermore, (CF)the altar that was at Bethel and the (CG)high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who misled Israel into sin, had made, even that altar and the high place he tore down. Then he (CH)burned the high place, ground the remains to dust, and burned the Asherah. 16 Now when Josiah turned, he saw the graves that were there on the mountain, and he sent men and took the bones from the graves, and burned them on the altar and defiled it (CI)in accordance with the word of the Lord which the man of God proclaimed, the one who proclaimed these things. 17 Then he said, “What is this gravestone there that I see?” And the men of the city told him, “(CJ)It is the grave of the man of God who came from Judah and proclaimed these things which you have done against the altar of Bethel.” 18 And he said, “Leave him alone; no one is to disturb his bones.” So they left his bones undisturbed (CK)with the bones of the prophet who came from Samaria. 19 Then Josiah also removed all the houses of the high places which were (CL)in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had constructed, [aa]provoking the Lord to anger; and he did to them [ab]just as he had done in Bethel. 20 And (CM)he slaughtered all the priests of the high places who were there on the altars, and burned human bones on them; then he returned to Jerusalem.

Passover Reinstituted

21 Then the king commanded all the people, saying, “(CN)Celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God (CO)as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.” 22 (CP)Truly such a Passover had not been celebrated since the days of the judges who judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah. 23 But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the Lord in Jerusalem.

24 Moreover, Josiah removed (CQ)the mediums, the spiritists, the [ac](CR)household idols, (CS)the idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, (CT)so that he might [ad]fulfill the words of the Law which were written (CU)in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord. 25 Before him there was no king (CV)like him who turned to the Lord with all his heart, all his soul, and all his might, in conformity to all the Law of Moses; nor did any like him arise after him.

26 Nevertheless, the Lord did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath with which His anger burned against Judah, (CW)because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him. 27 And the Lord said, “I will also remove Judah from My sight, (CX)just as I have removed Israel. And (CY)I will reject this city which I have chosen, Jerusalem, and the [ae]temple of which I said, ‘My name shall be there!’”

Jehoahaz Succeeds Josiah

28 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 29 (CZ)In his days (DA)Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria at the river Euphrates. And King Josiah went to meet him, and when Pharaoh Neco saw him he killed him at (DB)Megiddo. 30 (DC)His servants carried [af]his body in a chariot from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. (DD)Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father.

31 (DE)Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was (DF)Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 32 He did evil in the sight of the Lord, (DG)in accordance with all that his forefathers had done. 33 And (DH)Pharaoh Neco imprisoned him at (DI)Riblah in the land of (DJ)Hamath, so that he would not reign in Jerusalem; and he imposed on the land a fine of [ag]a hundred talents of silver and [ah]a talent of gold.

Jehoiakim Made King by Pharaoh

34 Then Pharaoh Neco made (DK)Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of his father Josiah, and he (DL)changed his name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz and [ai](DM)brought him to Egypt, and he died there. 35 So Jehoiakim (DN)gave the silver and gold to Pharaoh, but he assessed the land in order to give the money at the [aj]command of Pharaoh. He collected the silver and gold from the people of the land, each according to his assessment, to give to Pharaoh Neco.

36 (DO)Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zebidah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. 37 He did evil in the sight of the Lord, (DP)in accordance with all that his forefathers had done.
