²⁷ So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.^{(A) 28} Everyone ought to examine themselves^(B) before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. ²⁹ For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. ³⁰ That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.^{(C) 31} But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.^(D)

⁵ Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought^(A) to your ways. ⁶ You have planted much, but harvested little.^(B) You eat, but never have enough.^(C) You drink, but never have your fill.^(D) You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages,^(E) only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

⁷ This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought^(F) to your ways.

⁵ Examine yourselves^(A) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.^(B) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you^(C)—unless, of course, you fail the test?

⁴ Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone,^(A) without comparing themselves to someone else,^{(B) 5} for each one should carry their own load.^(C)
