“‘Our Father^(G) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
¹⁰ your kingdom^(H) come,
your will be done,^(I)
    on earth as it is in heaven.
¹¹ Give us today our daily bread.^(J)
12 And forgive us our debts,
    as we also have forgiven our debtors.^(K)
13 And lead us not into temptation,^[a](L)
    but deliver us from the evil one.^[b]’^(M)

¹⁸ With whom, then, will you compare God?^(A)
    To what image^(B) will you liken him?
¹⁹ As for an idol,^(C) a metalworker casts it,
    and a goldsmith^(D) overlays it with gold^(E)
    and fashions silver chains for it.
²⁰ A person too poor to present such an offering
    selects wood^(F) that will not rot;
they look for a skilled worker
    to set up an idol^(G) that will not topple.^(H)

²¹ Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?^(I)
Has it not been told^(J) you from the beginning?^(K)
    Have you not understood^(L) since the earth was founded?^(M)
22 He sits enthroned^(N) above the circle of the earth,
    and its people are like grasshoppers.^(O)
He stretches out the heavens^(P) like a canopy,^(Q)
    and spreads them out like a tent^(R) to live in.^(S)
23 He brings princes^(T) to naught
    and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.^(U)
24 No sooner are they planted,
    no sooner are they sown,
    no sooner do they take root^(V) in the ground,
than he blows^(W) on them and they wither,^(X)
    and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.^(Y)

²⁵ “To whom will you compare me?^(Z)
    Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.^(AA)
26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:^(AB)
    Who created^(AC) all these?
He who brings out the starry host^(AD) one by one
    and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,^(AE)
    not one of them is missing.^(AF)

⁹ All who make idols^(J) are nothing,
    and the things they treasure are worthless.^(K)
Those who would speak up for them are blind;^(L)
    they are ignorant, to their own shame.^(M)
10 Who shapes a god and casts an idol,^(N)
    which can profit nothing?^(O)
11 People who do that will be put to shame;^(P)
    such craftsmen are only human beings.
Let them all come together and take their stand;
    they will be brought down to terror and shame.^(Q)

¹² The blacksmith^(R) takes a tool
    and works with it in the coals;
he shapes an idol with hammers,
    he forges it with the might of his arm.^(S)
He gets hungry and loses his strength;
    he drinks no water and grows faint.^(T)
13 The carpenter^(U) measures with a line
    and makes an outline with a marker;
he roughs it out with chisels
    and marks it with compasses.
He shapes it in human form,^(V)
    human form in all its glory,
    that it may dwell in a shrine.^(W)
14 He cut down cedars,
    or perhaps took a cypress or oak.
He let it grow among the trees of the forest,
    or planted a pine,^(X) and the rain made it grow.
¹⁵ It is used as fuel^(Y) for burning;
    some of it he takes and warms himself,
    he kindles a fire and bakes bread.
But he also fashions a god and worships^(Z) it;
    he makes an idol and bows^(AA) down to it.
¹⁶ Half of the wood he burns in the fire;
    over it he prepares his meal,
    he roasts his meat and eats his fill.
He also warms himself and says,
    “Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.^(AB)”
¹⁷ From the rest he makes a god, his idol;
    he bows down to it and worships.^(AC)
He prays^(AD) to it and says,
    “Save^(AE) me! You are my god!”
¹⁸ They know nothing, they understand^(AF) nothing;
    their eyes^(AG) are plastered over so they cannot see,
    and their minds closed so they cannot understand.
¹⁹ No one stops to think,
    no one has the knowledge or understanding^(AH) to say,
“Half of it I used for fuel;^(AI)
    I even baked bread over its coals,
    I roasted meat and I ate.
Shall I make a detestable^(AJ) thing from what is left?
    Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”^(AK)
20 Such a person feeds on ashes;^(AL) a deluded^(AM) heart misleads him;
    he cannot save himself, or say,
    “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?^(AN)”

²¹ “Remember^(AO) these things, Jacob,
    for you, Israel, are my servant.^(AP)
I have made you, you are my servant;^(AQ)
    Israel, I will not forget you.^(AR)
22 I have swept away^(AS) your offenses like a cloud,
    your sins like the morning mist.
Return^(AT) to me,
    for I have redeemed^(AU) you.”

²³ Sing for joy,^(AV) you heavens, for the Lord has done this;
    shout aloud, you earth^(AW) beneath.
Burst into song, you mountains,^(AX)
    you forests and all your trees,^(AY)
for the Lord has redeemed^(AZ) Jacob,
    he displays his glory^(BA) in Israel.

“Do not learn the ways of the nations^(B)
    or be terrified by signs^(C) in the heavens,
    though the nations are terrified by them.
³ For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
    they cut a tree out of the forest,
    and a craftsman^(D) shapes it with his chisel.^(E)
4 They adorn it with silver^(F) and gold;
    they fasten it with hammer and nails
    so it will not totter.^(G)
5 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
    their idols cannot speak;^(H)
they must be carried
    because they cannot walk.^(I)
Do not fear them;
    they can do no harm^(J)
    nor can they do any good.”^(K)

⁶ No one is like you,^(L) Lord;
    you are great,^(M)
    and your name is mighty in power.
⁷ Who should not fear^(N) you,
    King of the nations?^(O)
    This is your due.
Among all the wise leaders of the nations
    and in all their kingdoms,
    there is no one like you.

⁸ They are all senseless^(P) and foolish;^(Q)
    they are taught by worthless wooden idols.^(R)
9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish^(S)
    and gold from Uphaz.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made^(T)
    is then dressed in blue and purple—
    all made by skilled workers.
¹⁰ But the Lord is the true God;
    he is the living God,^(U) the eternal King.^(V)
When he is angry,^(W) the earth trembles;^(X)
    the nations cannot endure his wrath.^(Y)

¹² But God made^(AA) the earth^(AB) by his power;
    he founded the world by his wisdom^(AC)
    and stretched out the heavens^(AD) by his understanding.
¹³ When he thunders,^(AE) the waters in the heavens roar;
    he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning^(AF) with the rain^(AG)
    and brings out the wind from his storehouses.^(AH)

¹⁴ Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
    every goldsmith is shamed^(AI) by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;^(AJ)
    they have no breath in them.
¹⁵ They are worthless,^(AK) the objects of mockery;
    when their judgment comes, they will perish.
¹⁶ He who is the Portion^(AL) of Jacob is not like these,
    for he is the Maker of all things,^(AM)
including Israel, the people of his inheritance^(AN)—
    the Lord Almighty is his name.^(AO)

¹² My people consult a wooden idol,^(A)
    and a diviner’s rod speaks to them.^(B)
A spirit of prostitution^(C) leads them astray;^(D)
    they are unfaithful^(E) to their God.
