Paul alone in the New Testament describes the sin-bearing work of Christ as reconciliation (11:15; 2 Cor. 5:18–20; Eph. 2:16; Col. 1:20, 22), although the idea is already present in the Old Testament, especially in Hosea. God’s alienation from us is ended by removing the cause of alienation (our sin, guilt, and condemnation) by the death of Christ (cf. 2 Cor. 5:21). In this sense, reconciliation is objective (2 Cor. 5:18, 19). However, it must be “received” (v. 11; cf. 2 Cor. 5:20), by the laying aside of our own alienation and hostility, that is, by repentance and faith in Christ.
