29:3 dragon. Egypt is likened to a sea monster (vv. 3–5). The term used can designate both the abundant crocodiles of the Nile and the sea monster that represented chaos in the mythology of the ancient Near East. The Bible calls this mythological creature “dragon,” “Leviathan,” or “Rahab” (32:2; Job 3:8; 7:12; 9:13 note; 41:1; Ps. 74:13, 14; 89:10; Is. 27:1; 30:7; 51:9; cf. Rev. 12:15; 20:2). “Rahab” is also used as a poetic designation of Egypt (Ps. 87:4; Is. 30:7). In the mythology of the cultures surrounding Israel this sea monster was a god who rivaled other gods, but in the Bible it was simply another creature living in submission to the command of Yahweh.
