Deut 1:4

1:4 Sihon . . . Og. The conquest of Transjordan is detailed in 2:24–3:11.

Heshbon. The name has been preserved in the modern Tell Hesban, located in Transjordan some thirty-five miles east of Jerusalem. Extensive excavations have discovered no remains at Hesban from Moses’ time (i.e., from the fourteenth century b.c.). It is possible that a nearby mound that does contain fourteenth-century remains is the Heshbon in Moses’ day.

Edrei. The name is probably preserved in the town-name of modern Der’a on the border between Syria and Jordan, which does have ruins of this period.
