David appointed groups from each of the three clans of Levi as musicians (15:16–26; 2 Chr. 35:3): the family of Heman from Kohath (vv. 33–38), the family of Asaph from Gershon (vv. 39–43), and the family of Ethan from Merari (vv. 44–47). The importance of music in worship is stressed (15:16 note), and what is said also gives a basis for the functions of these clans in the period following the exile in Babylon.
