22 Now that you have purified(A) yourselves by obeying(B) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,(C) from the heart.[a] 23 For you have been born again,(D) not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,(E) through the living and enduring word of God.(F) 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[b](G)

And this is the word that was preached to you.

Therefore, rid yourselves(H) of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander(I) of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(J) so that by it you may grow up(K) in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(L)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone(M)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(N) and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built(O) into a spiritual house[c](P) to be a holy priesthood,(Q) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(R) For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(S)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[d](T)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(U)

“The stone the builders rejected(V)
    has become the cornerstone,”[e](W)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[f](X)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(Y)

But you are a chosen people,(Z) a royal priesthood,(AA) a holy nation,(AB) God’s special possession,(AC) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(AD) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(AE) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

22 Since you have (A)purified your souls (B)in obedience to the truth for a (C)sincere love of the brothers and sisters, fervently love one another from [a]the heart, 23 for you have been (D)born again (E)not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring (F)word of God. 24 For,

(G)All flesh is like grass,
And all its glory is like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
And the flower falls off,
25 (H)But the word of the Lord endures forever.”

And this is (I)the word which was [b]preached to you.

As Newborn Babes

Therefore, (J)rid yourselves of all [c]malice and all deceit and [d]hypocrisy and [e]envy and all [f](K)slander, (L)and like newborn babies, long for the [g](M)pure [h]milk of the word, so that by it you may (N)grow [i]in respect to salvation, if you have (O)tasted [j](P)the kindness of the Lord.

As Living Stones

And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been (Q)rejected by people, but is [k]choice and precious in the sight of God, (R)you also, as living stones, [l]are being built up as a (S)spiritual house for a holy (T)priesthood, to (U)offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For this is contained in [m]Scripture:

(V)Behold, I am laying in Zion a choice stone, a (W)precious cornerstone,
And the one who believes in [n]Him will not be [o]put to shame.”

(X)This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for unbelievers,

(Y)A stone which the builders (Z)rejected,
This became the [p]chief cornerstone,”

and,

(AA)A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”;

(AB)for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, (AC)and to this they were also appointed.

But you are (AD)a chosen people, a royal (AE)priesthood, a (AF)holy nation, (AG)a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you (AH)out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 (AI)for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
