Proverbs 20:25-21:4

New International Version

²⁵ It is a trap to dedicate something rashly
    and only later to consider one’s vows.^(A)

²⁶ A wise king winnows out the wicked;
    he drives the threshing wheel over them.^(B)

²⁷ The human spirit is^[a] the lamp of the Lord^(C)
    that sheds light on one’s inmost being.^(D)

²⁸ Love and faithfulness keep a king safe;
    through love^(E) his throne is made secure.^(F)

²⁹ The glory of young men is their strength,
    gray hair the splendor of the old.^(G)

³⁰ Blows and wounds scrub^(H) away evil,
    and beatings^(I) purge the inmost being.

21 In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water
    that he channels toward all who please him.^(J)

² A person may think their own ways are right,
    but the Lord weighs the heart.^(K)

³ To do what is right and just
    is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.^(L)

⁴ Haughty eyes^(M) and a proud heart—
    the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.
