John Baptizes Jesus(A)

13 (B)Then Jesus came (C)from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”

15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

16 (D)When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and [a]He saw (E)the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 (F)And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, (G)“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Satan Tempts Jesus(H)

Then (I)Jesus was led up by (J)the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

But He answered and said, “It is written, (K)‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’

Then the devil took Him up (L)into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

(M)‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’

and,

(N)‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’

Jesus said to him, “It is written again, (O)‘You shall not [b]tempt the Lord your God.’

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and (P)showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

10 Then Jesus said to him, [c]“Away with you, Satan! For it is written, (Q)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’

Isaiah Called to Be a Prophet(A)

In the year that (B)King Uzziah died, I (C)saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, (D)with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said:

(E)“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
(F)The whole earth is full of His glory!”

And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.

So I said:

“Woe is me, for I am [a]undone!
Because I am a man of (G)unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King,
The Lord of hosts.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from (H)the altar. And he (I)touched my mouth with it, and said:

“Behold, this has touched your lips;
Your iniquity is taken away,
And your sin [b]purged.”

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:

“Whom shall I send,
And who will go for (J)Us?”

Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

And He said, “Go, and (K)tell this people:

‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
